Señor de los Milagros has origins from Lima, Peru. The depiction of Christ bearing the pain of his crucifixion as mural, stands as a constant reminder of his sacrifice for the Peruvian people. The float to which this offering of flowers and candles sits, is carried through the streets. The weight for the patrons carrying the mural signifies the burden they too share for upholding his name. The procession, which is the main celebration in Peru, is one of the largest in the world.
I had the opportunity to capture these moments in the heart of Schenectady at St. Anthony’s Church. People from all over, from all walks of life visited the memorial, walked with the patrons through the streets praying. Women proceeded the float burning charcoal and sage, as a method of cleansing. When we returned to our point of origin, we gathered to say thanks followed by a feast. Later in the evening a couple performed a traditional romantic Marinera. This courtship showing has influence from the many different cultures in Peru, and the dance has its own festival held in Trujiilo Peru since the 1960’s.
